The
Legal Secretary Diploma program provides training for entry-level legal
office careers. The program emphasizes the basic office skills
necessary to perform administrative, clerical and legal duties in the
modern law office. Graduates may pursue career opportunities in
business, industry, or government as legal office assistants or legal
secretaries or may elect to continue their education to earn the
associate degree in Legal Office Technology.
Occupational
Objectives
The
program stresses practical and specific office skills designed to meet
the employment and personnel training needs of attorneys, corporations,
legal clinics, courts, legislative offices, government agencies, law
firms, and the legal departments of banks, insurance companies, and
various business organizations. Students develop competencies in basic
office skills and learn to prepare various legal documents. In
addition, students gain a general understanding of procedural law and
the ethical and professional responsibilities of a legal office worker.
Occupational Skills
Upon successful completion of the Legal
Secretary program, the graduate will be able to:

Demonstrate basic knowledge of the law
and the legal system;

using information technology;

responsibility, self-management, and integrity; and
Demonstrate basic office skills.
Income Range
In May 2006, full-time
wage-and-salary paralegals and legal assistants had median annual
earnings, including bonuses, of $43,040. The middle 50 percent earned
between $33,920 and $54,690. *
Employment Outlook
Employment of
paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 22 percent between
2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations.
