Local Veteran Gives Back through Volunteering

Columbus, OH (February 8, 2011) – Randy Fergus, a surgical technology student, at Miami-Jacobs Career College has been giving back to patients at local hospitals for the past 8 months. Fergus, a Vietnam Veteran, served his country in the Navy and now is serving patients through volunteering at Grant and Doctor’s West Hospitals. The veteran says his time has been very rewarding and he really likes working with the patients and staff. During his volunteer time, Fergus has worked in the outpatient surgery, E.R., and post-op areas and is currently working in acute care for the elderly.

Fergus worked in manufacturing for 35 years before deciding to change careers and get into the medical field. He describes his time volunteering and at Miami-Jacobs as a “wonderful experience.” “The staff at Miami-Jacobs are very helpful and I am getting a good education” Fergus said. The surgical technology student has 11 months left until graduation and will graduate on his 37th wedding anniversary. He plans to use his experiences to gain employment with a local hospital in their surgical department.
